Dean Ryan claims new laws turning away rugby union fans
Dean Ryan fears for the future of the sport because of the raft of new laws being introduced this season that he claims are killing the game as a spectacle. The Gloucester head coach believes that the drop in attendances is a by-product of the poor quality of matches in the Guinness Premiership, which enjoyed a boom last year.
Portable On-Demand Cast = Podcast

This will not be another gripe post about how bad the term podcast is to the long term growth of portable media. You will never again hear me bash it. It is here to stay and we need to make the best of the situation. I am hearing more and more private discussion about changing the meaning of the term “Podcast” away from a strong connection with the iPod and making the name mean "Portable On-Demand Cast". I think this makes a lot of sense because the name podcast is here to stay and it is more often then not understood to mean a piece of content and less to mean a type of distribution. This transition to the Portable On-Demand meaning will take time as most have been conditioned to connect the iPod with Podcasting in thinking about the medium.

I think with the coming support for podcasting on the Zune, we have an opportunity to muddy the meaning to mean something a little more open and less Apple centric.

The challenge to everyone in the podcast industry is to start talking about this rebranding concept. I think it is important to the future of a strong and diverse distribution ecosystem that users will understand better.

Podcasting today has a user understanding and communications challenge that can be addresses by all parties involved at all levels in the industry. I also think that it is important to move beyond the singular focus that many podcasters large and small have on iTunes and the iPod. We are seeing many new distribution platforms on mobile, coming Zune support of podcasting and other types of mobile and living room devices that will bring greater success to content creators.

Podcasters need to be sure they offer their podcast RSS feeds right on their websites and stop only linking over to iTunes.

Tom Cruise Vs. Dr. Drew!

http://socialitelife.celebuzz.com/images/2008/06/tomcruise-photos-061208-05-thumb.jpg

Tom Cruise might have met his match. Unfortunately. Dr. Drew Pinsky gave in. The Celebrity Rehab counselor and level-headed Loveline doctor recently gave his diagnosis of Tom Cruise in an upcoming Playboy interview. Thank Xenu that someone in the medical profession recently gave their professional opinion of that wacky queen! Katie's going to need all the documentation she can get for the court battle that will take place if she ever escapes her brainwashing drug regimen!

"A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that's a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood - maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect," Dr. Drew says.

You forgot the closeted homosexuality. That's the shredded cheese on top of this chili! As expected, Cruise's lawyer lashed out at Drew and compared him to a Nazi. For having a medical opinion?

"This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels," says Cruise's high-powered attorney, Bert Fields.

Drew caved. Probably because he knows that Cruise has millions and, even scarier, followers. Some of them high-powered.

"Although Mr. Field's intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr. Drew, under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand. Again, Dr. Drew meant him no harm," his rep said in a statement.

Tom's not paranoid or anything. I mean, his cars are bombproof, but you never know when someone might throw grenades at his SUV. Right. *cuckoo sound*

Samsung decides to join an already crowded netbook market

It seems Samsung has decided to try and cash in on the current netbook craze, of course it seems they have a fairly standard offering and sadly it does not seem to be offering anything original other than the Samsung branding. While we are still waiting a final announcement on the specs, it was mentioned that it will feature an 8.9-inch display and Intel processor. Based on that we can assume that it will be the current favorite; a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor. Otherwise from the images we can see that it will have three USB ports, Ethernet, VGA and a built-in webcam. One item that seems to be missing is the built-in card reader. Still unannounced is any pricing. The netbook is expected to be available sometime this October although it looks to be (at least initially) heading to the Korean market only .

Prosser, Revisited

A friend, seeing my panorama pictures yesterday, said I could have done a much better job using Photoshop CS3. He offered to redo one of my panoramas to show me how much better Photoshop was at blending the exposures of the individual images. I have to agree, it definitely looks better. The resulting picture doesn't have any of the banding or abrupt transitions seen in my original panoramas. Time, perhaps, to grab a copy of CS3. The only question is whether it's worth spending $1000 on.

As the official site says, “Parco dei Cento Laghi is situated in a very interesting area which reminds of the spectacular Alpine views because of its evident glacial characterization.”

Indeed, as soon as I arrived there and parked my car in the spacious parking place in the “Rifugio Lagdei” (one of the many starting points for excursions), I was completely astonished. The park is located in the south of Parma, about 50-60km from it. The best way to reach it in my opinion is to take the highway of the “Cisa” (Highway A15 Parma-La Spezia) , but you can take a look for complete directions here.

this is the view you get on your arrival to Lagdei

On Lagdei there is a big wooden bridge that goes all around the perimeter of the starting point, which is really huge. Along the path there are various signs explaining the historical events that leads to the creation of this place. It is both relaxing and very interesting.

If you don’t mind a short walking, about 1h, you can climb up from Lagdei to the lake called “Lago Santo” (Holy Lake) which offers really a spectacular sight, just take a look at the picture below:

lago santo

wonderful, isn’t it? :) another option, is to start from the point of Lagoni, and take a different path that leads you up to 1400m on sea level, until you reach another lake called “Lago Scuro” (Dark Lake). This one is longer, but offers more possibilities to explore several places in one trip.

here it is, the Lago Scuro in all its splendour!

The latest 2 pictures below are taken from the starting point of Lagoni. The cool thing is that both Lagdei and Lagoni are easily reachable with car, even during winter, so you can start walking straight into the park.

All in all, I really recommend to visit this natural park if you have the chance. It will be a travel to remember for sure! Ah, was about to forget: inside the park there are over 150km of cycling paths for mountain-bikes, all well-signaled. So if you like trekking, this is a very good place!

Hello World
Welcome to this new blog.

All my old stuff has been saved and it continues to be available at the old urls (well... at least this is what I'm trying to do).

But from this post on I'm continuing with a new tool, a new template and hopefully some new ideas.

I wonder if there's still anybody out there.

Verizon tops T-Mobile in J.D. Power customer care survey, again

T-Mobile may have once been able to bank on J.D. Power's customer care survey to bolster its bag of bragging rights, but it looks like that's no longer the case, as Verizon has now finally edged it out, following a similar shift in J.D. Power's retail sales satisfaction survey last year. Not only that, T-Mobile actually fell to third place, behind Verizon's merger-mate Alltel. There isn't much of a spread between the top-ranked companies, however, with Verizon snagging a score of 103, Alltel scoring 102, and T-Mobile garnering a respectable 100. Only Sprint Nextel, which got a lowly 79, scored below the industry average. Among the other tidbits to be found in the survey, which included more than 11,000 respondents, is the fact that customers spent an average of 4.4 minutes on hold with customer service, a jump of 34% from the previous survey, while 49% of all wireless customers said they called in for help at least once, a minor uptick from the 47% reported last time around. That, J.D. Power says, is at least partly due to the "increasingly complex" wireless phones and services available nowadays.

FTC gives EA its blessing to go ahead with Take-Two takeover

EA-Take-Two neverending drama - Image 1

The wait is finally over for Electronic Arts -- at least as far as the Fedral Trade Commission is concerned. A couple of months ago, EA made an agreement with the FTC stating that they will hold out on buying Take-Two until one of these two things happen: a) FTC finishes its investigation on the takeover bid, or b) 45 days pass after EA complies with an information request from FTC.

Well it looks like it's scenario A that happened as the Federal Trade Commission has now given EA the green light on their proposal for the Take-Two acquisition. The conclusion of the non-public investigation, which was to determine whether EA's acquisition of T2 may violoate Section 7 of the Clayton Act or Section 5 of the FTC Act, was that the potential merger would not substantially lessen competition in the games market.

A letter sent by the FTC to both companies involved read, "Upon further review of this matter, it now appears that no additional action by the Commission is warranted at this time. Accordingly, the investigation has been closed."

Talks are still going on between the two companies, but it does look like it's about to come to a close. What's keeping the debate raging on is the issue on the appropriate per-share asking price. With this FTC development, it looks like Pachter sure is a step closer to proving his prediction true: EA will win out this round.
